1. Introduction

pdf2word ("we", "us", "our", or "Company") operates as a privacy-first document conversion platform. This Privacy Policy explains our approach to your data and privacy.

2. Our Privacy-First Approach

Client-Side Processing: By default, all document conversions happen directly in your browser using WebAssembly (WASM). No files are uploaded to our servers.

Optional Server Processing: Files larger than 100MB can be processed on our server for PDF to Word, Word to PDF, Excel and PowerPoint conversion, and HTML to PDF, but only if you agree. Server copies are deleted within 60 minutes. All other tools process your file on your device only.

3. Data We Collect

  • Browser Processing: No data collection. Processing occurs entirely on your device.
  • Server Processing (Optional): Only metadata is logged: conversion type, file size, processing time, and IP address for rate limiting.
  • User Accounts (Optional): Email, username, hashed password, and project metadata for saved work.

4. Server Processing Data Retention

When you choose server-based processing:

  • Uploaded files are stored temporarily in ephemeral storage
  • Files are automatically deleted within 60 minutes
  • Metadata logs are retained for 30 days for debugging and optimization
  • We never share files with third parties

5. Rate Limiting & IP Tracking

To prevent abuse, we track IP addresses for rate limiting purposes:

  • Free Tier: Maximum 3 server conversions per hour per IP
  • Pro Tier: Higher rate limits for subscribed users
  • IP data is not sold or shared with third parties

6. Security

  • All data in transit is encrypted with TLS 1.3
  • Database passwords and secrets are never logged
  • Project snapshots are encrypted with AES-256
  • Share links use cryptographically secure tokens with 7-day expiry

7. Cookies & Local Storage

pdf2word uses minimal tracking:

  • Session cookies for user authentication
  • Local storage for user preferences (theme, UI state)
  • No third-party tracking or analytics cookies

8. Your Rights

You have the right to:

  • Access your personal data
  • Request deletion of your account and associated data
  • Export your saved projects
  • Opt out of server processing
